“Sunflowers” is one of the most famous and celebrated works by Vincent Van Gogh. Created in 1889, this painting is characterised by its vibrant colours, expressive brushwork and profound emotional depth.
The heart of the painting is a simple vase adorned with fifteen sunflowers in various stages of life. The sunflowers burst with vivid yellows and oranges, radiating a sense of energy and life, van Gogh’s choice of colors was deliberate, as he believed that the vivid yellow petals symbolized the warmth of friendship and happiness, values he held dear.
Due to the mental health issues that plagued van Gogh, his artistic expression was often a way to cope with his inner turmoil. The sunflowers’ vibrant yet fragile existence, mirrors the complexities of the artist’s on psyche marked by moments of brilliance, struggle and despair.
