1877 Ferula of Pope Pius IX

2 oz Fine Silver Coin – Samoa 2025 – 5 Tala

The 1877 Ferula of Pope Pius IX is a rare liturgical artefact from the final year of the second longest-reigning pope, created as his papacy entered the modern age. It’s simple Latin cross reflects the austere dignity of Pius IX’s later years and the steadfast faith that marked his greatest legacy — the definition of Papal Infallibility at Vatican I (1870), The ferula’s crucifix-on-straight-staff design also became a model for many later papal staffs, and it continues to be used in papal ceremonies to this day. making it a historically influential piece.

This coin recreates the ferula’s defining elements — a straight, unadorned staff topped with a clean, dignified cross — echoing the clarity and resolve associated with Pius IX. Its minimalist design represents spiritual sovereignty after the loss of the Papal States, while refined textures evoke the solemn beauty of the original. The coin preserves the historical and ceremonial significance of the 1877 ferula, giving collectors rare access to an artefact rarely seen outside Vatican archives.

Measuring 33.8mm by 200mm, this 2oz 999 silver coin features gold gilding to accurately replicate the appearance of the original ferula. Limited to just 500 pieces, each coin comes with a Certificate of Authenticity confirming its individual edition number.
