The Last Supper was originally a mural painted by Leonardo Da Vinci, on the refectory of the Convent of Santa Maria Delle Grazie in Milan, Italy. However, the technique, medium, and placement of the mural within the Convent has led to much of it being lost. The full-scale copy of The Last Supper by his pupil, Giampietrino, is thus the main and closest article to it that exists. Recreated in 3D by precise referencing from both Leonardo’s original mural and Giampietrino’s oil painting on canvas, this piece artfully considers both to deliver a complete representation. Finer details that are not commonly noticed, such as the six coffer columns on the ceiling present in the mural but not in the copy, are reflected on this artifact. Conversely, the motifs on the walls of the room that are no longer obvious in the mural but depicted in the painting are delivered on this piece as well.
Also often described as an attractive and extremely good-looking man, this chosen portrait of Leonardo on the obverse is digitally printed with Stipple engraving to deliver a handsome and charming profile. At the corner of the coin is the legal tender, the Coat of Arms du Tchad.
To keep its proportions true to the actual painting, a new minting technique called “Bi-Metal Max” was applied to give this piece its remarkable weight while at a size of 145 x 110mm. This is made possible by combining 33.5 oz of copper as a base with a top layer of 2 oz of fine-silver, resulting in a super ultra-high relief topped with silver antiqued finishing.
